Position Available: Land Conservation Program Assistant
The Land Conservation Program Assistant position provides an exciting
opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in land conservation techniques,
and be an integral part of our conservation program in beautiful southwest
Michigan.
Position Overview
Chikaming Open Lands (COL) protects the open spaces and diverse natural
character of Southwest Berrien County. Our focus includes protecting the
water quality of the Galien River and Lake Michigan through preservation of
natural areas and prime farmland. Protected properties include riparian
buffers, old-growth forest, prime farmland and a Great Lakes Marsh.
The Land Conservation Program Assistant is a full-time salaried position,
supporting the technical and administrative aspects of COL's growing list of
conservation-related programs. Organization is extremely important, as is
an ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks and act as a support
person for the Program Director and the Board of Directors.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Assist with all aspects of the land and conservation easement
acquisition and stewardship program as directed by the Program Director.
This includes landowner correspondence, field visits, developing baseline
reports, drafting conservation easements, producing related maps with GIS,
easement monitoring, fee land management and title review.
2. Utilize tools and reports, such as the Preservation Priority Project
and Conservation Directions, to suggest items for COL's Strategic Plan,
Annual Work Plans and Budgets.
3. Develop and implement administrative procedures for organizing and
maintaining conservation-related records that comply with Chikaming Open
Lands Policies and the Standards and Practices of the Land Trust Alliance,
and document procedures in an Office Procedure Manual.
4. General office management and administrative support with
scheduling, correspondence, word processing, research, reporting, filing and
record keeping.
Qualifications
Ideal candidate will have a BS/BA in biology or conservation related field
and experience working in a small office team environment. Knowledge of
land and water conservation issues and prior experience with a non-profit
land trust are preferred. Excellent organizational skills are essential, as
is an attention to detail. Requires excellent computer skills and
proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, Access, Power Point.
Experience with GIS a plus. Ability to work outdoors and negotiate rough
terrain. Occasional evenings and weekends required.
