LAND PROTECTION SPECIALIST

 

(Application deadline - March 1, 2008)

The Michigan Nature Association, a statewide land conservation
organization located in Williamston, Michigan, seeks an experienced land
conservation professional.  This position will perform a variety of
tasks that have a direct impact on preserving diverse habitats, native
plant and animal species, and the wise management and conservation of
natural areas in Michigan. The land protection specialist will
participate in all phases of protection activities, from identifying and
researching possible land for conservation, to helping negotiate with
land owners, creating land management plans, helping monitor land use,
and working with the public. 

Qualifications and experience: 

A bachelors or higher degree in geography, civil engineering, mapping,
land use, biological sciences, applied ecology, natural resources,
botany, wildlife management, or related field is required.  A political
science/public policy degree with appropriate experience is
alternatively required.  Experience in law and real estate is highly
recommended. 

 

Excellent written and verbal communication skills; knowledgeable of
general land conservation strategies; legal, financial, and scientific
considerations involved in land conservation; able to work
independently, and work well with a wide variety of people---staff,
oversight committees, units of government, volunteers, and the public.

 

 

Duties and responsibilities include:  

 

Land acquisition

            Communicate with potential property donors or sellers

            Proactively seek out potential new properties

            Work with MNA's Sanctuary Committee on projects

            Prepare evaluations of potential projects

            Negotiate and draft land purchases, donation, conservation
easements

Assist in development of land management plans 

Assist staff with land acquisition (both fee simple and easement) 

Conduct title research 

Help investigate and eliminate property encroachments 

Assist with land surveying 

Conduct site assessments, surveys, and inventories

Draft legal and non-legal documents 

Prepare reports and findings 

Conduct public presentations 

Other tasks as assigned 

 

 Investigate and eliminate encroachments to existing sanctuaries and
plant preserves: 

            Defend legal property boundaries

            Work with stewardship staff to monitor and enforce
conservation easements

            Defend legal title 

            Remove improper tax assessments at the local or state level

 

Compensation

 

Annual salary commensurate with experience.  Benefits include health
insurance, life insurance, 10 days paid vacation, 8 paid holidays, and
savings/retirement plan.
