I recently spoke with Mike Saviola from the Dept of Ag and Markets regarding
best management practices for wind energy projects . Mike is located in
western New York and works with landowners and contractors to greatly reduce
soil loss as a result of windmill construction and maintenance. He said
that in many cases they are able to actually improve conditions on the
property (ie shoring up roads, reducing previous erosion problems, etc),
thereby aiding ag operations and improving production. Poorly conceived and
managed/executed wind power projects can cause serious damage.
I mentioned that many land conservation organizations (including SH) are
thinking about drafting brand new or updating old conservation easement
language regarding wind and solar energy projects. I also mentioned our
working group. He said that I should contact his Albany counterpart (Matt
Brower) and ask him to come and speak to the group. It's likely that what
would be presented would help easement drafting and other efforts. If
possible we may be able to combine it with solar/geothermal or some other
topics.
I sent an exploratory email to Matt Brower asking if he speaks with groups
and such. He responded positively.
Is this something the group might be interested to learn more about sometime
in the future?
